california redux

There's no place like home, and home is where your spirit feels free.

The magnet of California draws me back again and again. My spirit soars across the LA basin and the mountains and coastline of Malibu and Ventura. It's just one of those things, and I've come to accept the fact that as comfortable as I feel in the environs of New England (and England), there's a big part of me that lives in southern California, and has since I was a young lad.

I'm very lucky that at this point in my life I can find a balance in my lifestyle that fits between our coasts.

I was back in the LA neighborhood in mid-June and had a chance to plug in and recharge after wrapping up our final "Salon" trio show at the Burren in Somerville, MA with Brendan Hogan.

The van Gogh trio format has led to a deeper dive into the van Gogh Brothers’ catalog and arrangements. We will be driving forward with the trio as we approach bookings for the fall.

This summer we continue progress on album #14 with Marco Giovino producing and adding drums and percussion. We are thrilled with our first track with Marco, “Life is Gone,” a rootsy lament in a Robert Earl Keen-inspired shuffle with beautiful three part harmonies that recall Elvis Presley’s backup singers, the Jordanaires. We move on next to “Late for the Love (California III),” a brand new track with a big, Eagles-inspired chorus. We are really inspired about the new material and our new partnership with Marco.

September sees us return to Vincent’s on the 29th, with Steve Latt rejoining us and Andy Plaisted on the drum throne. We’ve also booked Thanksgiving weekend at Vincent’s and look forward to filling in with trio shows in and around Boston and Cambridge.

Kathy and I travel to Ireland in August for a long-awaited sojourn, and I will be traveling to New Orleans and LA in the fall for TBA dates with my LA-based band. Life is big and beautiful and I consider myself incredibly blessed.

I hope everyone has a fantastic summer. I'll check in from Ireland and look forward to seeing you in September!
