life's rich pageant

On Saturday, June 16th at 7:00 PM at the Burren in Somerville, we wrap up our "Salon Series" of relaxed, story-centric trio performances. We share this bill with roots songwriter and WUMB on-air host Brendan Hogan.  We hope you can join us for this very special, intimate show.

Life continues to unfold with surprises and coincidences in a wide, full circle. From my November journey across America on the heels of events with Richard Thompson and Joni Mitchell, to a Cinco de Mayo reunion at Vincent's Worcester with a California colleague from 20 years ago, life's loose ends seem to be tying themselves together with an energy all their own.

We return to the studio in May with renowned drummer and producer Marco Giovino (Robert Plant, Buddy Miller, Alison Krauss), new in town since my sojourn to LA. We heard about Marco from Boston locals Chuck McDermott and Dave Westner and finally met him through our friend, singer-songwriter Kerri Powers. Kerri was recently discovered online by my old Palo Alto colleague Brian Brinkerhoff who, coincidentally, has a production partnership with Marco. Brian now frequently comes to Boston (Worcester!) and spent Cinco de Mayo with us at Vincent's with Marco. This gave Marco a chance to hear the van Gogh Brothers and Brian and I chance to catch up- after 20 years! We are thrilled to have Marco's fresh perspective, deep Americana sensibility and cutting wit as part of our next recording. Stay tuned.

Our new publishing partnership with Raintree Music is also coming into focus with over 350,000 YouTube views of "Deep in the Water," a Voices of van Gogh track from our 2015 album, "Painting With van Gogh." The Voices project features Rock and Roll Hall of Fame writer (and former Ventures member) John Durrill, Bob Dylan protege, violinist Scarlet Rivera, and esteemed drummer and composer Quinn (T-Bone Burnett, Kanye).  Raintree's acquisition of our publishing interest in this song puts us in a good position for TV and film uses and for potential re-recordings. We are deeply grateful to Mike Verble, Raintree's founder and Chairman, for taking a flyer on this song.

I was able to catch-up with UK singer-songwriter phenom Callaghan at a pre-show soundcheck at Passim in Cambridge. Callaghan and I have shared stages in Malibu and written several epic tracks together in Los Angeles. She is a voice and talent to be reckoned with and is not long for small venues- in fact, she plays a show for 65,000 people at Hyde Park in London on July 15th.  Be sure to check her out- "A voice the whole world needs to hear." -Shawn Mullins

Finally, we play as a trio at 6:00 PM at the Tavern at the End of the World in Charlestown on Sunday evening, June 3rd. This is another new room for us. Please join us for a drink if you're in town.

We hope to see you at our June shows, as we will be winding down our live appearances for summer travels and fun.

Go well...
